Week Three- After High School

After high school, I am planning on attending a four year university. I am most likely planning on double majoring in both Social Work and Art. I am in hopes of pursuing a career as a social worker, either in public health or child welfare. I have also encountered the idea of an art therapist, but I am not fully aware of the work it requires.

  •  Public Health Social Worker
    • Average salary: $56,000 ( in USD as of July 24, 2013 )
    • Geographic location: those who work as a social worker in urban area tend to earn a greater salary than those who don't. 
    • Education: you may earn a bachelor degree in Social Work, unless you're interested in a more steady, better paying career, it is recommended to pursue a master degree in Social Work and a bachelor degree in either sociology or psychology. 
    • Personalities: if interested in pursuing a career as a public health social worker, you must qualify with the following:
      • compassionate among others, especially those who are in need
      • great listening skills
      • good problem solving
      • time management
      • people skills
      • organization
  • Child Welfare Social Worker
    • Average salary: $40,680 ( $19.56 median wage as of 2011)
    • Geographic location: those who work as a social worker in urban areas tend to earn a greater salary than those who don't. 
    • Education: you may earn a bachelor degree in Social Work, unless you're interested in a more steady, better paying career, it is recommended to pursue a master degree in Social Work and a bachelor degree in either sociology or psychology
    • Personalities: if interested in pursuing a career as a child welfare social worker, you must qualify as the following:
      • sensitivity
      • compassionate among children
      • love for children
      • willing to meet with the child and his/her family regularly 
      • good problem solving
      • great listening skills
  • Art Therapist
    • Average salary: $30,000-$40,000 (those with experience can earn $100,000+)
    • Geographic location: people who are in most need, or obtain a mental illness tend to be found more in urban areas. Therefor, art therapists who are found in urban areas obtain a greater salary than those who aren't. 
    • Education: it is intended to earn a master degree in Art, preferably Art Therapy. You are also required to complete 1,000 hours of supervise treatment and authorize with the Art Therapy Credentials. 
    • Personalities: if interested in pursuing a career as an art therapist, you must qualify with the following:
      • identify with people of all backgrounds 
      • patient
      • creative
      • compassionate
